Villa Elzenhagen, located on Monsterseweg between Poeldijk and Monster, was built around 1920 as a residence for the Van Schouwen family. On the three hectare estate, the family established a horticultural business with greenhouses for growing grapes, a large orchard and even their own tennis court for family and friends.
Workers' houses and a coach house were also part of the estate. People from outside Westland could learn the horticultural trade here. The economic crisis in the 1930s forced the company to close down. After that, the building was put to a range of uses. During the Second World War, for example, it housed a family that had fled the Nazis.
In the 1960s, the villa was given a new life as a hotel and restaurant. Stables made way for hotel rooms. A café terrace replaced the horse trough. For many Westlanders, the property became a favourite location for dinners, weddings and parties. After a thorough renovation in 2015 and a restyling in 2026, this characteristic historic building is experiencing a new chapter, as a welcoming place for everyone in Westland and the surrounding area.
